Taking over Joyo.com in China to later rebrand it to Amazon.cn didn’t help Amazon much to be successful in that country. Though it’s still functioning in China, the Chinese prefer Alibaba over Amazon and there is a reason for it. The Chinese are well known for their self-expression and attention to detail. For them, it’s not user needs that stand first. They have always been known for mediocre features (that may even clutter the UX!).
Will Alibaba or Amazon win the eCommerce race?
Even if it’s clear that they are doing well, big time, in their own countries, it has to be said that their plans to expand have been steaming for over a decade now!
Amazon delivers a huge array of products and services– from groceries, daily essentials, fashion apparel, daily deals to even cloud computing services– and there is a reason why Amazon has become synonymous with eCommerce.
Alibaba, on the other hand, provides a platform for businesses to sell a huge array of products in the B2B, C2C, and B2C models.
By the year 2020, it is evident that we will get to see even more head-to-head competition between these two biggies. It will be interesting to see who wins, and how, with their own innovations, or strategic growth measures.
